People who talk to Naminé much (at all) might be a little confused when she pulls out the "happy for you" icon, her big shut-eyed smile, at moments that seem quite inappropriate. Emo one moment before, and then, bam, smiling like someone put hooks in the corners of her mouth and pulled up.

. . . the truth is, that's not so inaccurate.

Namine's canon is, of course, not produced in the West. It's a product of Japan, and as such, carries some basic Japanese cultural values, despite being a Disney product as well as Squeenix. One of these is the value that holds that your personal feelings should not impose on the happiness of others.

Towards the end of Sora's half of Chain of Memories, Naminé begins crying in front of Sora, and Sora grabs her cheeks, pulls her face into a smile, and tells her, paraphrased, "Smile for me. I can't bear to see you cry, so even if you're sad, smile, at least until my real memories are back, so I won't feel bad."

And so Naminé smiles.

She's happy for you. But not happy for your good fortune, or happy for your presence, or anything else; she's 'happy' for your sake, so that you won't be brought down.
